Great Ideas For Decorating Your Boy's Room

Decorating your home can be an exciting adventure. It is a great way to add your personal taste and flair to your living space. Some spaces are easier to decorate than others. A girl's room, for instance, lends itself naturally to pink and purple, flowers, butterflies, cute paint, frills, fun, etc. Boys' rooms are not as easy to decorate. You have to be careful not to over-embellish, otherwise your boy's room will start to look like a girl's room, even if you use blues and greens and reds and other colors usually associated with boys. The following are some great decorating ideas for a boy's room.

Tip One: Decorate the boy's room based on their interests. This does not mean you should go out and get everything in the character or cartoon they currently like. Their specific interests may change. However, this does not mean you can't decorate their rooms based on themes. For example, if their favorite movie of late is the Disney Pixar film "Cars," you do not need to decorate the room with Mater and Lightning McQueen. Within a few weeks, they may have moved on to a new favorite film. However this does not mean you cannot decorate a room in a car theme. Just don't get too specific. You do not want to have to redecorate every week.

Tip Two: Use what you already have. There are a lot of fun ways to recycle things that your child has grown out of in order to decorate their room. For example, your son may love dinosaurs, but may have grown past the stage where they like to play with the small kind that come as a prize in a cracker jack box. This does not mean you should throw them out. Instead, you can use them. For example, create a window covering of wood, and paint it cute, then use hot glue to create a fun border using the small plastic dinosaurs your child has grown out of.

Tip Three: Choose a central piece or theme. This is a common rule of decorating no matter what kind of a room you're doing. However, when decorating a boy's room this can be very helpful. If you have an item you love such as a piece of vintage sporting equipment, or an old train, or even a throw pillow, you can use this as a starting point. You can then base the rest of your decision around the colors, patterns and textures of your core or central item. For example, let's say you have a pair of old of running shoes. If the shoes were cream with red stitching, you could use those colors as the accents and highlights of the room. If you find a throw pillow with great colors, use the colors in that to choose wall colors, curtain colors, bedding, etc.

Tip Four: Pick up some decorating magazines and look through them. Sometimes you will see things in a living room that would work perfectly for your boy's room. Get inspiration and ideas in professionally decorated rooms, and then find easy ways to incorporate these ideas in your home on your own. For example, you may see a great canvas painting of a baseball game; instead of going out and spending hundreds of dollars on a canvas painting of your own, go to a local craft store and buy a blank canvas. You can then paint your own sports team, equipment, scene and so on. Basing the style of your room off something professionally decorated can be a great way to go.

Tip Five: Have fun and don't overspend. You must have a clear picture of exactly what you want in the room, take the time to browse magazines and websites and even your friends' boys' rooms to see what things they've done that you like and don't like. Decorating can be expensive, so don't overspend, chances are, there will be things you want to change. Always keep your receipts so that returns are easy.

For the best results in decorating a boy's room, get the input of the boy. Have fun, and remember, unless you want to decorate frequently, choose long-lasting decor, and themes that can grow with your child.
